Brazos ala Reina – Indo Style
Travel to/from Aceh requires a stop at the Medan airport. There isn’t a whole lot to do there – especially after a fire destroyed about half the airport. However, there is a traditional cake that is made in Medan – so I thought I would bring some home. I bought two of the traditional cakes – named (I think) Piku Ambon. I also bought a different one – it is called Bulo ??? (something). I am not particularly fond of the Piku Ambon – its a bit rubbery and the texture is more like a thousand strings bundled together … then layered vertically, rather than your horizontal layer cake. Of course, it really doesn’t matter how much or how little I like the Piku Ambon – the staff like it … Decy was appreciative … and Decy’s mom Doortje was absolutely estatic.
As for the other cake, a Bulo ???? … it is more like a long roll filled with something (in this case strawberry flavoring). There is no frosting on it. I found it incredibly good …. and it reminded me a bit of Brazos ala Reina (spanish for the “queens arms”). This was the boys’ and my favorite cake in Colombia. In this case however, fresh strawberries were not used … there was no frosting … and the texture leaned towards that of a angel food cake. Overall, a pleasant taste …. and Decy, Chely, Thasya, and I ….. ATE THE WHOLE THING (over the course of 3-4 days).
Not much to report RE the weekend.
Chely went out Friday and Saturday night. Friday was to a party. Saturday was a date with John.
Thasya had a party on Friday and Saturday was her last volleyball match. There were 5 volleyball teams – they placed 3rd.
I collapsed on Friday … but on Saturday (after working all day at home) Decy and I went to dinner with our friends Nat and Cherrel. It was actually the 1st time we had been out with another couple since we arrived. Afterwards, Decy and I went to Club Tiga Puluh – it had been a number of months since we were there. Then, we went to the Sabang area and had porridge, before heading home for bed.
On Sunday, we all hung around the house – sadly, I spent most of Sunday working again.
And now … it is MONDAY
Today, Chely has a special fitting for the finals competition on modelling. Only 8 of the 16 girls were invited to the fitting. I think there is a practice / work session Tuesday. The competition is on Wednesday. I may take off work Thursday morning so I can watch the competition (begins about 11pm).
BTW – for those who have been wondering what happened to that new employee that was not performing very well. We moved him into Accounting to give him a fresh opportunity. He is not doing very well there either. I believe that on / about 1 Febr he is moving into yet another position …. hopefully he can master that.
…… ciao ciao

Uh, if Chely’s competition is on Wednesday then WHY would you take off work on Thursday to see it???And how BIG was the Bulo?
