GW – Two Steps Backwards
Regrettably, GW has taken several steps backwards and is now back in the hospital. Assuming the Dr’s have properly diagnosed his condition, GW has Hirschsprung’s Disease. You can easily find it on the internet with the proper spelling. http://www.eapsa.org/parents/resources/hirschsprungs.cfm is one site (sorry, I’m not good at creating hot links; maybe Josh, Paul, or Chris and tell me how). I am surprised to hear that about 1 in 4500-7000 children are born with the disease.
At GW’s age and with already obvious complications, there are not very many options – a) surgery, or b) a miracle. Waiting and “hoping” it will heal is not an option. We have been in prayers since he returned to the hospital. Dr’s have been trying to clear the passage ways but they are also fighting a battle of time – the longer they wait, the weaker he gets. Surgery is planned for our Wednesday afternoon at 4pm. The surgeon that needs to assist is in Bali (don’t know if working or holidays) and is coming back to Jakarta promptly … but still can’t get here before noon today (Wednesday). In the meantime, GW is on an IV and feeding tube …. and they are irrigating him to try a) open things up, and b) prepare him for surgery.
Please keep GW in your prayers. Decy will be at the hospital most of the day. I will join her in the afternoon. Also, pray for Danny and Dolly -the parents. Dolly is Decy’s sister. They are devastated – because Dolly cannot have children and GW is Danny’s sister’s baby whom they adopted. They are devastated on two fronts: a) by the illness and the implications and risk of loss of life, and b) by the mounting costs. While the costs are nowhere near what they would be in the US – Danny and Dolly do not have insurance (such is a luxury in Indonesia) and even if they did it would only cover a small percentage of the costs.
I have encouraged them to move forward on the surgery given the situation and prognosis associated with doing nothing. God will intervene in His way …. we just need to be open to His will.
Need to work on some things. Ciao ciao. GBU.
