Weather Patterns

While true talking about the weather tends to be boring – nobody can do anything about it – I will nonetheless mention that it has been raining quite a bit overnight.  In fact over the past month it has rained quite a bit and there have been several flash floods in the Bogor and Bandung area that have taken people’s lives  – including expat students and teachers.  The reason I mention this is that Indonesia has very clear rainy and dry seasons.  The rainy season should have extended until about 1 April – but actually went until about May. Then we had a short period of little rain.  Now, June is turning out to be quite wet.

Pundits say the rain is proof of global warming … of course, they seem to consider global warming as the cause of just about any natural event.  I guess it is their way of saying “not my fault”.   Also, lots of organizations like to point to the US as the cause of GW …. however, I have seen statistics that show that Indonesia is quite a significant contributor and is particularly a “bad actor” in the area of deforestation.  I’m not sure that anybody can really point to one country, one industry, one concept and say “THAT is the cause of the world’s ills” …. but they try.

On a more personal note, in less than 2 weeks Chely will be home from school.  She hasn’t been home in almost a year, although we did get to see her in December and I again in May.  We are very excited that she is coming home – although we recognize that as she grows and matures, coming home will be more awkward.  I expect being in our house won’t be that particularly challenging as we have all the modern aspects of life – but, going to Ciputat and other similar places will seem more and more foreign to her.  And, over time, she will have decreasingly less in common with her Indonesian family and friends.  Nevertheless, it is very important that she come home and see the family.

One thing in the back of my mind is that I will not always be in Indonesia.  And, Chely will not always be a student with a foreign student VISA.  At this point it is unclear where she will live permanently and/or how she might visit us on our next assignment, wherever that might be.  These are uncertainties RE the future … but not something easily worked today.  Time will tell.

Decy and Nathasya had more castings / auditions yesterday.  Don’t yet know the outcome.  Decy was offered the part in a commercial that was going to be filmed in Yogyakarta this week.  She turned it down as she just completed back-to-back out of town trips to Pangandaran and Makassar.   There will be other opportunities.

As for me … I’m doing fine … just working hard putting together a company plan.

Well, guess I better close.  I need to work on some things and then eat breakfast and call a taxi – Pak Yono is sick again this morning.

Ciao ciao.  GBU.
